The 2022 edition of the ISSER Roadshow, organised jointly with the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), attracted the participation of diverse communities providing an inclusive platform for discussing pressing development issues, while enabling knowledge sharing and learning.
The event was held on 11 May 2022 at the Jophus Anamuah-Mensah Conference Centre of UEW, chaired by UEW Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Andy Birikorang, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mawutor Avoke.
In his remarks, Prof. Birikorang commended ISSER for the work it has done over the years and its contribution to national development and academia and pledged the commitment of UEW to collaborate with the Institute.
Before his presentation on the topic "Ghana's Economy Today: Options for Stabilising and Boosting the Economy," ISSER, Prof. Quartey delivered an opening statement on behalf of the Institute, saying:
“The ISSER roadshow is a unique activity that gives the faculty of ISSER the opportunity to take a road trip outside Accra and to connect with different communities, making it a strong reflection of ISSER’s commitment to continually invest in strong stakeholder relationships, and tap into the insights of diverse communities.”
On her part, Senior Research Fellow and immediate past Head of the Social Division of ISSER, Prof. Adobea Yaa Owusu gave a presentation on the topic “Ghana's Social Development Outlook," giving an evidence-based assessment of Ghana's health, in terms of education, environment, housing, water and sanitation, work and employment, social values, gender, governance, and energy.
Earlier, the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science Education, UEW, Prof. Lucy Attom highlighted Ghana’s worsening social and economic situation and urged that academics should do more to contribute to ameliorating the challenge through research.
The 2022 edition of the ISSER Roadshow provided an opportunity for the Institute to discuss with stakeholders the findings of recent publications, namely the State of the Ghanaian Economy Report (SGER) 2020 and the Ghana Social Development Outlook (GSDO) 2020, alongside recent developments in the Ghanaian Economy.
Dubbed “harnessing stakeholder engagement and feedback for research impact,” the roadshow activity is situated within the range of stakeholder engagement activities undertaken by ISSER to deepen the quality and social relevance of its knowledge-producing work. It has seen the Institute collaborate successfully with various institutions over the years, including the Economics Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the University for Development Studies (UDS), and the then-College of Education and Distance Learning, University of Cape Coast (UCC).
Other notable participants at ISSER Roadshow 2022 included: the Omanhene and Traditional Council of the Effutu Traditional Area, the Regional Police Commander, the Municipal Chief Executive, the Presiding Member of the Municipal Assembly. Others were: faculty and staff of ISSER; deans, heads of departments, students, faculty and staff of UEW; government officials; the media, among others.
