Prof. Felix Asante, Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, has made a presentation on the activities of ISSER at a Side Event of the Africa Risk Capacity (ARC) board meeting organized at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on Tuesday 19th February 2019. The Side Event discussed “Risk modelling and Early Warning through Africa RiskView and Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation in Ghana.” The event began with a presentation from Ms. Frederica Carfagna of Africa Risk Capacity on the Africa RiskView (ARV) software as a weather modelling platform which seeks to serve as an early warning tool. She discussed the evolution of the drought risk model and presented the results of drought risk modeling undertaken in Ghana. Mr. Victor E. O. Addabor, a technical lead from NADMO and a member of the Ghana Technical Working Group followed up to present on how ARV has been customized to fit Ghana’s needs in managing drought risk. After his presentation, Professor Asante joined his fellow presenters as they discussed how ISSER could effectively collaborate with the ARC and the Ghana Technical Work Group on the implementation of ARV in Ghana. Prof. Asante then proceeded to lead the representatives of the organisations on a tour of facilities at the Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation Unit at ISSER. This was to allow them acquaint themselves with the presence of the technology at ISSER used for monitoring, learning and evaluation. African Risk Capacity is a specialized agency with a vision to protect the livelihoods of vulnerable people in Africa against the impact of natural disasters through home-grown, innovative, cost effective, timely and sustainable solutions. Present at the event were representatives from the National Disaster Management Organisation, Environmental Protection Agency, Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning and Esoko. Others included Ministry of Food and Agriculture, Hydrological Services Department, Ghana Statistical Services Department, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ghana and Water Resources Commission. The rest are Ministry of Environment Science, Technology and Innovation, United Nations Development Programme, Select Committee on Agriculture and on Food Security, Ghana Agriculture Insurance Programme, Ghana Metrological Agency and Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services.
