Prof. Peter Quartey delivers inaugural lecture at Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences

The Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), Prof. Peter Quartey, delivers his inaugural lecture today, 13 March 2025, at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS). His lecture, titled "Debt, Investment and Growth in Ghana: Did We Borrow to Consume?” will examine whether Ghana’s increasing debt accumulation has been channelled into productive investments and economic growth or primarily used for debt servicing and consumption. He will explore the intricate relationship between debt accumulation, investment, and national development.

The GAAS inaugural lecture is a prestigious platform for newly elected fellows of the Academy to present their scholarly work other fellows, invited guests and the public. Since its inception in 1973, these lectures have maintained high academic standards while remaining accessible to non-specialists, addressing a broad diversity of contemporary issues of national or international significance.

Prof. Quartey joins a distinguished group of eminent scholars who have delivered inaugural lectures at GAAS, including Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice President of Ghana; Emeritus Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana; Prof. Henrietta J.A.N. Mensa-Bonsu, Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana; Prof. Nana Susubribi Krobea Boaten (S.K.B. Asante), constitutional expert and statesman; and renowned poet Prof. Kofi Anyidoho, who delivered his lecture in 2011. The most recent lecture was delivered last year by Prof. Regina Appiah-Opong, Professor of Toxicology at the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), University of Ghana.

Today's lecture, chaired by Emerita Prof. Takyiwaa Manuh, Vice President of the Arts Section at GAAS, will take place at the Kwame Nkrumah Auditorium of GAAS.
