The Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), Prof. Peter Quartey, has been nominated to serve as the representative of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS) on the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC). He succeeds Emerita Professor Elizabeth Ardayfio-Schandorf, whose tenure on the committee ended in September 2024.
The President of GAAS, Prof. Kofi Opoku Nti, made the announcement in a letter to the Minister of Finance, dated 22 July 2024, with a copy sent to Prof. Quartey. The letter expressed the Academy's appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to PIAC’s important work, emphasising the significance of the committee’s mandate.
PIAC is an independent body tasked with overseeing the management and use of petroleum revenues in Ghana, ensuring transparency and accountability for the benefit of all Ghanaians. In his role, Prof. Quartey will bring his extensive expertise in socio-economic development and public policy to support the committee's objectives.
Prof. Quartey, who was elected to the Fellowship of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in October 2021, expressed gratitude to the GAAS President for entrusting him with this responsibility. “I am truly honoured by this nomination and deeply grateful to the President of GAAS for the trust placed in me. I look forward to contributing my expertise to support PIAC in fulfilling its critical role of ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of Ghana’s petroleum resources,” he said.
The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, established in 1959, is the nation’s premier learned society, bringing together leading intellectuals and professionals to advise the government and relevant institutions on key issues affecting national development.
ISSER congratulates Prof. Quartey on this prestigious appointment and expresses confidence that his contributions will help ensure the effective and transparent management of Ghana’s petroleum resources.
