ISSER congratulates Director, Professor Peter Quartey on his induction as fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences (GAAS). At a ceremony held on Tuesday, 23 November 2021 at the auditorium of the Academy in Accra, Prof Quartey was inducted alongside 10 other distinguished scholars, including the Chair of the University of Ghana Council, Justice Sophia Akuffo and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo.

Prof. Quartey said: “I feel honoured and humbled to be ushered into the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Ghana’s Premier Learned Society. I look forward to deploying my skills and expertise in service of the noble mission of the Academy.”

The induction was administered by the President of GAAS, Emeritus Prof. Samuel Kofi Sefa-Dedeh, FGA, following the presentation (reading of profiles) of candidates by GAAS Vice Presidents Prof. Kofi Opoku Nti, FGA (Arts) and Emerita Prof. Isabella Akyinbah Quakyi, FGA (Sciences).

Other aspects of the awe-inspiring event included reading of the declaration and signing of the register of fellowship by the newly inducted fellows, presentation of membership certificates by the President and decoration of inductees with brooches by the Vice Presidents of the Academy.

The event was chaired by Supreme Court Judge and immediate past President of the Academy, Professor Henrietta Mensah-Bonsu, and witnessed by luminaries in academia and industry, as well as colleagues, family and friends of inductees.

 

About the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences

The Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences is Ghana’s Premier Learned Society, founded in 1959 by the Government Instrument of Incorporation. Its aim is to bring together the highest level of intellectuals, experts, and professionals in the country to constitute a ‘Think Tank’ in the Arts and Sciences to enable it advise government and other relevant bodies on issues of importance to national development.

You are the Director of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana. You hold a PhD in Development Economics from the University of Manchester (UK), MSc in Quantitative Development Economics (University of Warwick, UK), MPhil. Economics (Ghana) and BA Economics (Ghana).

You are a former Head of the Department of Economics and Director, Economic Management Programme, University of Ghana. You served as the Deputy Director, Centre for Migration Studies, University of Ghana, and also as Head, Economics Division, Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana.  You have been re-elected recently to the nine-member Board of Directors of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), for a second term.

You have published extensively with over 2300 Google Scholar citations. Your research interests are: Financial and Monetary Sector, Private Sector Development including SMEs, Development Finance, Migrations and Remittances and Poverty Analysis.

You have consulted for both local and international institutions including the World Bank, African Development Bank, OECD, USAID, Overseas Development Institute, DFID and many more. You are a member of the African Economic Research Consortium and the Global Development Network. You are generally well known in the circles and networks of African and international development economists.
