The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) hosted the 2026 Meeting of the Working Group in African Political Economy (WGAPE), a network of faculty and advanced graduate students in Economics and Political Science whose work combines field research experience in Africa with training in political economy methods. Since 2002, WGAPE has met semi-annually to discuss in-progress research by its core members and invited guests, fostering rigorous scholarly exchange on issues shaping governance, development, and economic transformation across the continent.
Held at the ISSER Conference Facility from 29 April to 1 May 2026, the meeting brought together previously selected scholars for research discussion sessions, as well as training and networking sessions designed to strengthen research capacity and deepen academic collaboration.
A highlight of the convening was a keynote seminar held on 30 April, which welcomed participation from the wider ISSER and University of Ghana communities, including faculty, researchers, students, and invited guests. The seminar featured a thought-provoking keynote address by Prof. Ama Panin on religion, giving, and pathways to mental health and wellbeing. The session also featured reflections by ISSER’s Prof. Fred Dzanku, who served as discussant and offered further insights into the discussion.
Welcoming participants to the seminar, ISSER Director Prof. Robert Darko Osei highlighted the importance of convenings that deepen academic thought and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration on issues central to Africa’s development.
ISSER faculty and members of the Institute’s wider academic community also participated in the keynote seminar, reflecting the Institute’s continued commitment to fostering spaces for critical inquiry, intellectual exchange, and collaborative research.
