ISSER researchers in key role at summit on effect of global developments on African economies

Prof. Peter Quartey, and Dr. Ama Pokuaa Fenny yesterday spoke at an economic summit organized to discuss the effects of global developments and policy response options open to sub-Saharan economies, and the Ghanaian economy in particular.

Dubbed the Cedi Summit, the joint Citi TV-ISSER-ABSA Bank event featured as keynote speaker ISSER Director, Prof. Quartey, who presented on the topic: ‘The Global Economic Situation: its Impact on sub-Saharan Countries and the Ghanaian Economy.’  Other keynote speakers were Chief Economist at ABSA, Jeff Gable, and Senior Partner at AB & David, David Ofosu-Dorte who spoke on ‘Global Economic Outlook and Africa’ and ‘the Global Economy: New Realities, New Possibilities’ respectively.

In a comment on the event, Prof. Quartey said: “ISSER recognises that collaboration across all spheres of society – government, academia, media, industry etc. – is important in helping us combine and leverage our respective strengths to propel us further and faster towards desired development outcomes -- this is an aspiration that ISSER is totally committed to.”

“The Cedi Summit aligns with ISSER’s commitment to creating and being part of credible platforms that make it possible to extend the reach and potential impact of its work,” he added.

The summit was rounded up with a panel discussion involving the keynote speakers and three additional experts: ISSER Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Fenny; Senior Policy Advisor to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Yaw Ansu; and President of the Association of Ghana Industries, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, and moderated by General Manager of Citi FM, Bernard Avle.

Held on June 27 at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the summit was attended by diverse participants including government officials, financial sector representatives, academia (notably researchers of the Economics Division of ISSER), graduate students of ISSER and the Economics Department, University of Ghana, and the media.
