Mrs. Justina Adwoa Onumah, candidate of the 2016 PhD cohort at the Institute of Statistical, Social, and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana has been awarded an international prize of Best PhD Student Paper presented at the 17th Global network for the Economics of Learning, Innovation and Competence building Systems (GLOBELICS) Conference, held in Costa Rica from 3rd to 5th November, 2021.
Justina said: I am thrilled and honoured to be the first ever PhD Candidate from Ghana to receive this international recognition from GLOBELICS. I thank the faculty of ISSER, particularly my supervisors, Prof Felix A. Asante and Prof Robert D. Osei, for their commitment and support in fostering my love for the important subject of Development Studies.”
Her award winning paper titled, Welfare dynamics of innovation and innovation system interactions: implication for poverty reduction among agricultural households is part of her ongoing PhD thesis, from which Justina together with her Supervisors have already published the first empirical chapter in the reputable Innovation and Development journal.
Prof Osei said of the award: “This is a well-deserved accolade, and a testament to Justina’s dedication and hard work since her admission into our PhD programme.”
“She has truly lived up to the aims of the University of Ghana PhD programme which is focused on providing the highest level of training for scholarly work, and mentorship to students to propel them towards successful careers.”
In his comments, Prof Asante highlighted the feeling of fulfillment to see one’s student scale great heights, as he encouraged Justina to be relentless in working hard in order to sustain this positive start.
ISSER Director Prof Peter Quartey congratulated Justina on behalf of ISSER, saying: “ISSER is extremely proud of you and we say ayekoo to you for clinching the Best PhD Student Paper at the 17th GLOBELICS conference. We wish you well in your PhD defense and your future research.”
He also congratulated her Supervisors, Prof Asante and Prof Osei, thanking them for their combined efforts towards this success story.
