PhD Student

Emmanuel Abazaami is a doctoral candidate in Development Studies at the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER), University of Ghana, where his research explores the intersection of citizen engagement and public health systems.
Originally from Kanjarga in the Builsa South District of the Upper East Region of Ghana, Emmanuel holds a Master of Science in Development Planning and Management from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he researched NGO partnerships and food security, and a Bachelor of Arts in Integrated Development Studies from the University for Development Studies (UDS). His academic work is driven by a commitment to generating knowledge that improves the lives of marginalised and impoverished communities.
His doctoral thesis investigates social accountability as a catalyst for improving maternal healthcare in the Kasena Nankana Municipality. Moving beyond clinical outcomes, the research examines the governance of care, exploring how community voices, expressed through both formal structured channels and traditional informal networks, hold healthcare providers and administrators to account. His scholarly engagement includes participation in the AIMS-Imperial College Global Fellows Program on "Synergizing Efforts for Healthy and Sustainable Cities," the IJURR Foundation Workshop for Early Career Researchers on Academic Writing, and the Research School on Sustainable Development organized by the University of Ghana in partnership with Lund, Gothenburg, and Uppsala Universities.
Complementing his academic work, Emmanuel brings over a decade of experience in development planning, monitoring, and evaluation. He is the Founder and Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives for Vulnerable Groups (SIV-G) and currently serves as an M&E Specialist for Icare Sustainably International, headquartered in Kenya. He has been invited to conduct workshop evaluations for the Mothers and Midwives Project in Uganda, funded by Mutada Aid. His consultancy portfolio spans health, gender, and livelihoods programming, including evaluations for ActionAid Ghana, CARE International, and Children Believe.
In 2024, he was awarded the Societal Engagement Seed Fund by Imperial College London for the Women and Waste Project. He is a member of the Commonwealth Association of Planners and the SPRING International Association of Development Planners. Emmanuel is a native Buli speaker and is proficient in Gurune, Dagbani, Hausa, Mampruli, and Twi.
