ISSER celebrates appointment of Professor Ernest Aryeetey as Emeritus Professor

The Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Professor Ernest Aryeetey as Emeritus Professor, marking a historic milestone for ISSER as he becomes the first-ever recipient of this esteemed position. The distinguished economist who is renowned for his transformative leadership, is celebrated for his profound impact on academia and research in Africa.

Professor Aryeetey, a luminary figure in the academic realm, brings a wealth of experience to this role. Serving as the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (2010-2016) and Director of ISSER (2003-2010), he has played pivotal roles in shaping the academic landscape, demonstrating a commitment to excellence and innovation.

His academic journey began with the study of Economics at the University of Ghana, and later a PhD at Universitaet Dortmund in 1985. Professor Aryeetey's illustrious career includes academic positions at esteemed institutions such as the School of Oriental and African Studies (London), Yale University, and Swarthmore College.

Professor Aryeetey's legacy is marked by his instrumental role in advancing research and development. During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor, he spearheaded initiatives that transformed the University of Ghana into a research-intensive institution. His strategic priorities aimed at fostering structural transformation in Ghana and Africa have had a lasting impact on academia.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Professor Ernest Aryeetey recently received an honorary degree, Doctor of Laws honoris causa, from the University of Ghana. The citation underscored his transformative leadership, including reforms to the university's governance structure and the development of a strategic plan to elevate it to a world-class research-intensive university during his tenure as Vice Chancellor.
