Context
CIRAD (https://www.cirad.fr/en) is the French research centre for agricultural development. The ART-Dev joint research unit aims at developing collaborations with national and international research and development organisations in Ghana, including public bodies. In that framework, the organisation will conduct in partnership with the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) of University of Ghana, a diagnosis of the research and development actors working on value chains and jobs in the agricultural sector in Ghana. This diagnostic will be conducted by a research assistant, under the supervision of two economists from Cirad and an economist from ISSER.
Goals
The general objective is to conduct a diagnosis of the research and development actors working on value chains and jobs in the agricultural sector in Ghana. The diagnosis will aim at answering the following questions:
- What are the main organisations (Ghanaian and foreign research institutions, NGOs, etc.)?
- What are their main activities?
- Who are the donors?
- What are the type of interactions between actors?
- Who are the researchers publishing on jobs and value chains in Ghana?
- What are the research issues?
- What are the partnership opportunities for CIRAD and ISSER?
Duties of the role
The research assistant will support the implementation of the method by performing the following duties:
- Literature review on value chains and labour research
- Attend / co-facilitate a workshop to identify the main organisations and their interactions
- Online research on organizations’ activities and identification of key informants
- Development and test of a semi-directed interview guide
- Conduct of semi directed interviews with key informants
- Actors characterization
- Social network analysis
- Workshop to discuss results
- Report writing
- And any other tasks needed to reach the goal
Profile and competencies;
MA or MPhil degree in economics
Experience in social network analysis
Experience in value chains and labour research
Use of Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and PPT)
French speaking will be appreciated, but not mandatory
Contract conditions
Full-time commitment between January and June 2023
Service contract with payment at the end of each month (5000GHC), determined by the achievement of deliverables
Additionally, the project will cover transportation expenses for interviews
The research assistant will be hosted at ISSER in the Cirad office and work under the supervision of three economists
The research assistant will use her/his laptop and related devices/accessories
