Dr. Bawakyillenuo presents the findings of the study
On Tuesday, August 16, 2022 the Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research (ISSER) shared findings of a nationwide baseline social and economic survey on the generation of electricity using nuclear technology in Ghana. The study, which assessed the extent to which businesses and households in Ghana perceive, are informed about and are interested in the Nuclear Power Programme of the country, was conducted by a team of ISSER researchers at the request of Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG).
Prof. Peter Quartey welcomed participants, highlighting ISSER’s position as a leading think tank and its ability to provide robust, objective, and credible data to support evidence-led decision-making by governments in Ghana and Africa.
He noted that the study will contribute significantly to advancing activities geared towards the goal of diversifying Ghana’s energy sources with nuclear technology. He thanked NPG, the Nuclear Power Institute (NPI), and other stakeholders for their partnership with ISSER.
Prof. Quartey ended his remarks by acknowledging his co-researchers -- Dr. Simon Bawakyillnuo, Dr. Aba Crentsil, and Dr. Ralph Armah – for their valuable roles in the successful conclusion of the baseline study.
NPG and NPI give an overview of the Nuclear Power Programme, thank ISSER
Prof. Seth Debrah, Director, NPI gave an overview of Ghana’s nuclear power journey, which, he said started a long time ago. He noted that while a lot has been accomplished, there is a need now to hear the views of the public to help in securing the social license required for the success of the programme in Ghana, which is why his organization commissioned ISSER to undertake the baseline study.
On his part, Ing. Andrew Ashong, NPG (speaking on behalf of the Executive Director, Dr. Stephen Yamoah) highlighted efforts being made by NPG to settle on a site for the nuclear power plant, adding that the study will provide good direction as far as further engagement with communities is concerned.
Dr. Eric Glover, Director, Radiation Protection Institute of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission ended the sessions with a brief message on behalf of the Director-General.
